I coach spellers who are ultimately aiming to compete in regional or national bees, meaning that I work with you on a regular basis (about weekly) starting at any point after the previous year's Scripps National Spelling Bee. Depending on your skill level and what you want to improve on, we will work on different aspects of spelling and vocabulary that will help you succeed in spelling competitions. Sessions may include (but are not limited to) going over lists of words, conducting mock spelling bees, reviewing language patterns and roots, studying vocabulary, or discussing bee strategy. I offer the first hour of coaching free. As of spring/summer 2020 I am available to coach new students, but I reserve the right to put a cap on my number of students at any time. I can also refer you to other coaches if I am not able to coach you. Contact me to set up a time if you are interested. I do charge for sessions, but if you do not feel that you are able to pay the rate I charge, please do not hesitate to discuss the situation with me. I do not want finances to be a barrier to us working together.
STATEMENT (July 2019): Given that there are a number of articles, books, etc. available at this point that give a number of different accounts regarding how much I charge, I would like to clarify that I do NOT charge $200 per hour and have never voluntarily set that rate for my services. A client once paid $100 for a single half-hour session through Brainsy’s Spelling Coach ECN, and that rate has since been lowered. I agreed for a short time to the Brainsy rate because I was excited about working through the platform; in fact, I still work with this platform (at a rate of $100 an hour), although I do well over 95% of my coaching through my own business. The $200 an hour rate was a required rate for the ECN, and not what I charge through my own business, through which I have given over 600 hours of coaching at a rate of $15 to $25 an hour. Furthermore, I believe strongly in accessibility to spelling bee preparation services for people of all incomes, and I am more than willing to discuss finances with any family wishing to work with me who feels that they cannot pay the rate that I charge.
